White Earth Nation Boys and Girls Club attend Minnesota Swam game

As part of the continuing efforts to introduce and engage youth in the sport of lacrosse, the TLC Committee, in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of White Earth, took 96 youth to the Minnesota Swarm’s home opener against the Philadelphia Wings on Sunday, January 19.  The Swarm, Minnesota’s professional lacrosse team, held its Native American Appreciation Day on the 19th, thus the youth were able to participate in a variety of activities.

Arriving prior to 11:00 a.m., the White Earth youth were taken onto the Xcel Energy field for ‘turf time’ where Swarm team member, Corbyn Tao, led basic lacrosse instruction and drills, demonstrated skills and held a question-and-answer session.  Also prior to the game, half of the youth were provided a copy of Art Coulson’s The Creator’s Game – A story of baaga’adowe/lacrosse, met Mr. Coulson and were able to get his autograph. The remaining youth were again led to the lower level of the Xcel Center and eventually back out onto the field during the pre-game activities, which included the national anthem and the introduction of both lacrosse teams. As the individual Swarm players were introduced, they ran out of the tunnel onto the field where the White Earth youth were ready to give them each a ‘high five’.

Half-time entertainment included lacrosse players from the Oneida Nation who played a traditional exhibition game.  The youth were able to watch one of their staff members, White Earth Boys and Girls Club Unit Lead Dennis Williams, in the exhibition after he received an invitation from the Oneida to join them on the field.
