Gov. Mark Dayton to visit White Earth Reservation town rocked by explosion


WHITE EARTH, MINN. – Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton will visit Callaway, Minn., to survey damage following a crash on Thursday, March 24 between a train and a semi-truck carrying propane. Firefighters battled a fire for more than 10 hours when the tanker carrying the propane exploded around 10:20 p.m. Eleven rail cars and one locomotive also derailed during the accident. The governor is expected to visit the site of the accident on Saturday, March 26 around 10:30 a.m. He will then meet with local county, city and tribal officials, along with representatives from the Canadian Pacific Railroad at 11 a.m. at the Callaway City Hall. At noon, the governor will meet with emergency responders, volunteers, and community members during lunch at the Callaway Community Center. The White Earth Nation and the Shooting Star Casino, Hotel, and Event Center will be providing the lunch. “I’m so proud and thankful for all the men and women that responded to the accident at Callaway,” said White Earth Secretary-Treasurer Alan Roy. “We were all very impressed how individuals and communities on and off the reservation united to help battle the fire in a safe and professional manner.” Mason is a resident of Callaway.
